2022 Estate Pinot Noir – Yamhill-Carlton

2022 Estate Pinot Noir – Yamhill-Carlton
From 40-Year-Old Dry-Farmed Vines on Oregon’s Marine Sedimentary Soils

The 2022 Pinot Noir Estate is a wine of patience, purity, and place. Sourced from Kramer Vineyards’ original 2.5-acre block in Yamhill-Carlton—planted between 1985 and 1988 on marine sedimentary Peavine soil—this sustainably farmed, dry-farmed vineyard has been tended with a light hand since its first planting in 1984.

Harvested in mid-October under warm skies, the fruit underwent one of the slowest fermentations in Kramer’s history—55 days from harvest to press—driven by a sharp post-harvest temperature drop. A “less is more” approach guided every step in the cellar: gentle handling, cultured yeast to ensure a clean ferment, and no excessive extraction. The wine matured for 10 months in French oak (20% new), developing harmony and depth without obscuring vineyard character.

Why You'll Love It

  • Site Expression: Peavine soil and dry-farming yield small berries with intense red fruit and savory minerality
  • Clonal Diversity: Pommard lends spice and structure; Wädenswil adds perfume; Upright clone brings brightness
  • Flavor Profile: Red cherry, raspberry, and rose petal aromas lead into pomegranate, red currant, and forest floor on the palate
  • Structure: Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity give focus and age-worthiness
  • Low Intervention Philosophy: Sustainable farming, minimal additions, restrained oak—letting the vintage speak for itself

Drink or Hold

Drink now for its vivid red fruit and energy, or cellar through 2032 to unlock deeper spice and umami character. Serve slightly cool (60–63°F); a brief decant can help open its more savory layers.

Perfect Pairing

Duck breast with cherry gastrique—its richness complements the wine’s acid spine and red fruit purity.

Tasting Notes
Pale garnet in the glass, the 2022 Pinot Noir Estate opens with vibrant aromatics of red cherry, wild raspberry, rose petal, and a trace of sandalwood. On the palate, bright pomegranate and red currant are framed by silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle notes of white pepper and forest floor emerge on the long, expressive finish.
Vineyard Notes
Planted between 1985 and 1988, this 2.5-acre block of Kramer’s estate vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton has been dry-farmed since day one—long before sustainable practices were widely discussed, and before the Willamette Valley was known on the global wine map. These now 40-year-old, own-rooted vines—Pommard, Wädenswil, and the rare Gamay Beaujolais Upright clone—have quietly delivered expressive, site-driven Pinot Noir for decades. The block sits at 725 feet of elevation, rooted in Peavine soil: a well-drained, marine sedimentary series typical of Yamhill-Carlton. The stress of dry-farming combined with the low fertility of Peavine encourages small clusters and thick-skinned berries, resulting in concentrated fruit with a distinct edge of savory minerality. Each clone contributes a unique piece of the wine’s profile—Pommard for structure and spice, Wädenswil for floral lift, and Upright for freshness and vivid red fruit. This diversity in a single block, paired with a minimalist farming philosophy, allows the vineyard to speak clearly through the glass.
Production Notes
Following a late harvest in mid-October, fermentation proceeded slowly due to a temperature drop, extending skin contact to 55 days. The wine aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, then was bottled in September 2023. Alcohol: 13.0%. pH: 3.50. TA: 5.6 g/L.
Winemaker Notes
“The 2022 vintage taught us patience. With cooler harvest conditions and a prolonged fermentation, we saw remarkable depth and integration develop over time. This wine is a true reflection of site and season—layered, textural, and built for both immediacy and aging.” – Kim Kramer, Winemaker
Food Pairing Notes
Ideal with duck breast and cherry gastrique. The wine’s vivid fruit, acidity, and supple tannins enhance the richness and sweetness of the dish without overwhelming it.
